Just Call Me The Officiant
Yesterday, I had the privilege of being an officiant at one of my good friends' wedding. I was definitely nervous going into yesterday as the wedding ceremony is one of the most significant moments of the couple's relationship. Almost an entire year of planning led to this single moment where I could potentially fail to meet expectations.
I practiced the speech many times against other friends (including one person who is the most wonderful person I know). That definitely helped to understand which parts were the most difficult (in terms of spacing and space) and gave me suggestions for improvements for the speech.
It was my first time officiating and I am glad I could officiate for such great friends. The nerves definitely settled down when I realized that this couple wanted to include me in this special moment in their lives. For many of the sections of the ceremony (when talking to the bride and groom), it was so intimate that I almost forgot that there were any other people watching.
I had a couple stutter throughout my speech but didn't seem too noticeable (from what people tell me). But overall, it went better than I had expected and, most importantly of all, I didn't drop or mess up the rings!
Would I consider being an officiant at another wedding?
Well, I think I would only agree to officiate weddings of close friends.
